Arriving in Erinsborough in 2003, David was relocating his family from Perth to set up a business. Several minor set backs saw him having to move in with his father Harold Bishop in Ramsay Street. Their relationship was strained to begin with due to a lack of contact over the years and the fact that David’s family seemed to be taking advantage of Harold’s offer of a place to stay.
Things soon became worse for David as it became clear that his business was falling through. He was entering a partnership with a friend but the friend took all of David’s investment into the business and left. The money invested was most of David's life savings and a panicked David began lying to his family to hide the blunder he made. The truth came out though and the family was forced to come to terms with a life without money.
Things did get better though. They continued living with Harold and slowly adjusted to living economically. David was employed by Toadie as a legal secretary in Toadies law firm. Lil also found employment to help to take the strain.
2005 saw Lil drift away from David and begin a relationship with Paul Robinson. This proved very difficult for David, who desperately tried to convince Lil that she still loved him. He failed and was forced to come to terms with the fact that Lil didn't love him anymore. The pair eventually settled into a quite acceptance of each other. Things changed between them as Paul was found out to have had a string of relationships and dealings with Affirmacon who had planned to force the residents of Ramsay Street to sell their properties so they could knock them down to build a massive shopping complex. It also looked like Paul had been preying on Lil for several months and had a hand in several attempts at destroying David's reputation. David and Lil found themselves drawing closer together as time went on.
