One of the older resident of Ramsay Street and good friends of Harold Bishop, Lou ran his own pub in Lassiters "Lou's place". He then went into business with Harold as co-owner of the newly built General Store after the Lassiter fire in 2005.
Lou Carpenter first appeared in Neighbours in 1988 trying to win Madge Ramsay away from, then rival, Harold Bishop. Proving unsuccessful, he left Erinsborough and moved to Queensland. 4 years later, Lou returned as a permanent character when Harold was, presumably, dead at sea.
In 1996 Lou left Neighbours once more, but (after persistent petitions and such from the fans) he returned and has remained a part of Neighbours since this return.
Lou is well know for his interesting business deals which turn generally turn out to be scams of some sort (from smuggling a cure for baldness into the country in stuffed kangaroos to cutting out the launderette in a clothes washing service offered by the general store). He is often found scurrying off to meet someone or getting one of his employees to carrying out some secretive task. This backfired on him when he got involved in horse race fixing with Rocco Carmeneti (Carmella Carmenti's father). Getting found out saw him jailed for short time and fined heavily.
Lou's friendship with Harold is long standing and extensive. The two were held close together by Madge Bishop, Harolds late wife, who they had both vied for. Harold and Lou are often arguing over some matter or another but it is generally good natured. Their strong bond saw Harold donating one of his kidneys to Lou after he fell ill. Problems in their relationship have occurred though. The arrival of Trixie Tucker saw neither talking to each other.
