Katya caused a stir in Ramsay Street as she arrive at news of her fathers death. Katya had been disowned by Alex several years ago after she lashed out at her family due to the death of their mother, Alex's first wife. Whilst her arrival pleased the Kinski's Alex's death and Katya's sudden involvement in the lives of Rachel and Zeke soon proved problematic.

Katya was present when Alex finally died, shortly after his marriage to Susan Smith. Susan was the one who was at Alex's side when he died though causing a degree of resentment from Katya. Further problems occurred as Katya watched Susan's behaviour with the Kinski children and continue her close friendship with Karl Kennedy. Katya was unhappy with Susan's relationship with Karl, who Katya felt was harbouring strong romantic feelings for Susan. Katya fought with both Karl and Susan and tried to find prove of their relationship and undermine their credibility in caring for Rachel and Zeke. This had the side effect of causing bad feelings from both Karl and Susan towards her who struggled under the onslaught of attacks from Katya. Katya continued in her efforts to provide support for Rachel and Zeke and announced that she was to contest Susan's custody of the children.
