It’s Melbourne Cup day and celebrations are taking place at the Scarlet Bar with customers invited to dress up and watch the race on a big T.V inside. Elle offers to help Will serve during the day to give Steph a chance to return home and get some rest.
Dylan continues to insist he is Kerry’s father. As Sky ponders over what he is telling her she realises he is responsible for her daughter’s disappearance. Her anger is toned down a little as Dylan explains that he found Kerry in Stingrays arms as he passed out after taking Kerry from the hospital on the night of the fire and if it wasn’t for him Kerry would probably have died.
At Loris’s suggestion, she and Harold start their relationship afresh with a quiet meal in the Scarlet bar. Both are enjoying pretending to become acquainted for the first time however their date is interrupted by Janelle who hands Loris an envelope with divorce papers from Loris’s husband. Whilst this appears to throw Loris for a while she admits to Harold that she was expecting the papers and it gives her a chance to move on. With her past relationship laid on the table Loris begins pressing Harold for more information on his last relationship. Harold tells Loris how he truly loved Madge and Loris finds herself apologising for pressing the issue as Harold admits Madge is dead.
With her tiredness put down to Charlie’s recent tendency to cry in the night, Toadie suggests to Steph that she tries tough love with Charlie and outlines the method of controlled crying. Steph’s worries are dealt with by Karl who explains the process is safe and that they should simply wait 5 minutes before tending to Charlie and just rub his stomach when they do. The idea is to then increase the time between Charlie crying and them tending to him. Steph agrees to give controlled crying a go, but struggles to stay away as Charlie wails from the bedroom of number 32. Toadie is ever vigilant though and encourages Steph to stay away. The pair eventually collapse on the sofa, sleeping through the night without Charlie uttering a sound.
Lyn gets a hint of the strain recent events with Dylan are putting on Elle. She attempts to suggest that Dylan might not be the best person for Elle to invest herself in romantically. Elle replies that Lyn of all people should know that you cannot choose who you fall in love with.
Sky gathers all of her friends and family to her hospital room where she explains the uncertainty about Kerry’s father. This announcement is met with scepticism by Janelle but Karl is forced to admit that, given Kerry’s weight and health, it is possible that a mistake has been made. Sky has to quieten those gathered twice as they begin to argue about this news. She tells them that Kerry, Dylan and Stingray will all undergo a paternity test to find Kerry’s father.
