Despite a mass of change made to the show during 2006 Neighbours continues to suffer from poor viewing figures in Australia.
New speculation suggests the changes, which themselves were initiated as ratings began to slump, were ordered by and impatient Ten network rather than the Neighbours production team. Whilst these changes have attracted new fans the majority of established fans have not been convinced by the nature of the changes which have seen high profile cast members departing from the show whilst the storylines within Neighbours become more generic.
The first episodes of 2007 saw a return to the family oriented off beat Neighbours, however this has yet to invigorated fans with viewing figures in Australia currently standing at around
500,000. This pales in comparison to Home And Aways figures of 1.2 million viewers.
Whilst big changes in script writing take months to reach screens it seems Neighbours still needs shaking up. The popular opinion amongst established fans is for the shake up to be of the Neighbours production team rather than the cast with a focus on writing strong storylines rather than the overly dramatic writing of 2006.
