How To Cancel Neighbours
5th February 2006
Almost every year sees speculation and rumours about the cancellation of the popular Australian soap, Neighbours. With 2006 the show sees itself loosing viewers in Australia. The popularity of the show also seems to be suffering when compared to it's close rival Home and Away, another big television soap aired on the Seven network in Australia.
Whilst there is nothing to give credence to any of these rumours comments from an ex Home and Away script producer, Coral Drouyn, sheds new light on how the show is financed and who holds the power to decide the future of Neighbours.
Posting on the forum of a popular Home and Away fan site the ex script producer explained that Neighbours is closely tied to the channel that air it in Australia, the Ten Network. This tie goes beyond normal finance and extends to provide the sets, production crew, sets, props and other production facilities. This means if Ten were to cancel the show and withdraw all of their support the show would be unable to continue as the core production entities would disappear effectively ending the show regardless of overseas funding and support.
There is nothing to suggest Ten are considering axing the long running soap, however news of Neighbours suffering in Australia may be of more interest to fans around the globe now considering how important it is to the show's survival.
