Fan speculation had already suggested that Fox may be some for of hallucination due to the progression of Paul's tumour and media reports hint that this is in fact the case.

Fox's reality is questioned by Elle as she finally turns her attention to Paul as he suffers due to his brain tumour. She is left to point out that Fox is unreal, a fact that is supported by the fact that Fox has only been seen by Paul.
